David Alexander

David has spent most of the past 35 years in a variety of roles in the international aid and development sector.  After first working for Save the Children in Morocco and Uganda, he went on to be their Country Director in Ethiopia, where he led their response to the 1984-5 famine.  For several years he then managed charitable hospitals in the UK before joining British Red Cross in 1993 as Head of International Aid and subsequently became their International Director. 

Since leaving BRC in 2005 he has divided his time between consultancy and interim management.  Recent interim assignments have been with Marie Stopes International (Regional Director for South Asia) and Save the Children UK (Kenya Country Director; DR Congo Country Director; East Africa Regional Director).  Until recently he was interim CEO of Merlin, where he led their integration into Save the Children, and he is now interim CEO of ActionAid.  David has been a trustee of responding to Conflict and the Humanitarian Aid Relief Trust. 

He and his wife Kirsty (a GP) live in Bristol and have two grown-up daughters, Zoe and Anna.
