Get Involved With a Link
If you are interested in developing a Link, please read the following information to see which applies to you.
I am a developing country health institution
If you are an institution in a developing country, it is good to first think about the following before forming a Link:
- Which areas of your work do your staff need additional training and what service development is required?
- What would you like to achieve and how can a UK institution help you to achieve this?
- Do your plans fit with national priorities?
- Can you get the commitment of senior management in your institution?
You can incorporate your UK Link partners’ support into your institutions within national strategies for developing healthcare. If you do not have contacts in the UK you should contact the International Health Links Centre in Liverpool.
I am a UK health institution
If you are an institution in the UK and would like to set up a Link, it is good to first think about the following:
- What do you have to offer?
- What range of expertise can you draw on and commit to?
- What would you, as an institution, like to gain from the Link?
- Where might you obtain funding from?
You will find that creating a Link can contribute to your staff’s professional and personal development and aids in recruitment and retention. If you would like to know about a suitable overseas Link partner for you, please contact the International Health Links Centre in Liverpool.
I am an individual
If you are an individual who would like your institution to develop a Health Link, whether you are in the UK or in a developing country, the first thing to do is to discuss your ideas with others within your department or institution. If there is general support for your ideas you should, with others, develop an outline plan and approach the institution’s senior management or Board for support. If you are in the UK or elsewhere THET will support you in engaging with your institution by presentations, promotional materials, written guidance or putting you in touch with other organisations who could offer you support. To find out how you can get involved, please contact us on +44 (0)20 7290 3892 or info@thet.org. Alternatively you can contact the International Health Links Centre in Liverpool.
Please note, THET may occasionally advertise vacancies for volunteers and paid posts. If you are a qualified health professional or have relevant experience in the health sector and are interested in volunteering overseas for a longer period of time (e.g. 3 months or more), the best organisation to contact is VSO. Ruth Grearson (Ruth.Grearson@vso.org.uk) be able to give you more information about what is involved. Another organisation that provides opportunities for health professionals to work overseas on longer placements is Medecins Sans Frontieres, a medical humanitarian agency that recruits both medical and non-medical staff to work overseas, and Skillshare International.
For more information on ways you can either set up a Link, or participate in one, please contact us on +44 (0)20 7290 3892 or info@thet.org.
