First visit in June 2007: Factfinding. Newborn resuscitation training course set up with training the trainers to continue this work.Newborn life support and principles of Newborn care taught to hospital staff and traditional birth attendants. Local staff identified to continue this training and taught both the principles of resuscitation as well as a suggested model to teach it. They are then supported in their teaching by UK trainers allowing them to develop the skills and confidence to deliver this training throughout the region in our absence. We also have professionals from other areas of paediatrics accompanying us to try and improve a range of paediatric services. We are looking at curriculum changes as well as trying to improve supplies of essential drugs to this area.
We are currently providing resus equipment that they require and would be grateful for any supplies that may be used for this purpose.
We are also always looking for NLS trainers who would be keen to visit and help with our project.
We are happy to share experiences and keen for others to offer any advice on making our project maximally effective.
