Capacity building in Malawi Health (nursing/midwifery)

Over the past four years The Royal College of Nursing Scotland (RCNS) and The National Organisation of Nurses of Malawi (NONM) have collaborated on a number of projects including programmes aimed at developing organisational capacity, organisational governance, media representation, organisational leadership and nurse leadership. This work has lead to a solid understanding of the needs of the nursing workforce in Malawi and a strong working relationship between the two partners.

The overall goal of our current link is to develop young Malawian nurse/midwives into successful future nurse leaders and midwives who will contribute to the strengthening of the nursing/midwifery workforce and improve health outcomes for the people of Malawi.

Health care issues and concerns in Malawi are becoming more complex and with this there is a growing need for nurses who are motivated, critical, analytical, competent, and in possession of a high level of leadership. The majority of nurses in Malawi are enrolled nurses and technicians whose level of training is minimal compared to the complexity of health challenges of the country. They are also often expected to take up managerial and supervisory roles without the training for them to perform at the required capacity as leaders.

We are keen to work with new partners interested in building nursing capacity in Malawi. We also engage in fund raising/sponsorship activities to support health workers support groups throughout Malawi.
