Kilimanjaro-Oxford Links “OK Links” are links between Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals NHS Trust and Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC) in Moshi, Tanzania. KCMC is a hospital of just under 500 beds providing comprehensive care as a teaching hospital for 13 million people. “OK Links” represents links in a variety of clinical (eg nursing, surgery, anaesthetics, radiology and radiography) and non-clinical (clinical engineering, medical physics) departments in these two institutions.
The emphasis is on the two-way transfer of skills through teaching and training. Staff from Oxford make annual visits to KCMC and trainees from KCMC come to Oxford to learn specific skills. In February 2011 fourteen staff from Oxford spent time at KCMC. In addition medical students from Oxford go to KCMC for elective periods and two medical students at KCMC are funded by Oxford annually to spend their electives in Oxford. It is planned that two postgraduate surgical trainees from KCMC will be fully funded by Oxford to spend two years basic surgical training in Oxford. Through hearing of “OK Links” David Drake, a recently retired paediatric surgeon from Great Ormond Street Hospital, has gone to KCMC for the best part of two years to train surgeons there in paediatric surgery.
The UK end of this link is not confined to Oxford. If you would be prepared to go to KCMC for a short or long period to teach and train health workers, or if you would welcome someone from KCMC to your department to learn appropriate skills, please get in touch.
