The University Hospital of South Manchester, Gulu University Faculty of Medicine and Gulu Regional Referral Hospital (GRRH) formed an educational partnership, the Gulu-Man Link, in 2006. Gulu, Northern Uganda, is a post-conflict region following 22 years of civil war at the hands of the Lords Resistance Army. Gulu University established a Faculty of Medicine in 2004, and with the support of UHSM, saw its first intake of doctors graduate in 2010. All partners collaborate to identify deficits in training needs and determine appropriate teaching programmes to assist both undergraduate learning and continued professional development of hospital staff. Long term volunteers contribute to longer-term service delivery at the GRRH.
To date, staff from medical, nursing, midwifery, physiotherapy, administrative and management backgrounds from UHSM, Northwest hospitals and further afield have volunteered. We have placed healthcare professionals for longer term roles (ranging from 6 months – 1 year) to deliver healthcare directly to the Gulu population. We facilitate shorter length trips for healthcare educators who deliver healthcare education, support and research opportunities.
