The Foundation Trusts of Taunton & Somerset (Musgrove Park Hospital) and Somerset Partnership Mental Health Trust  joined forces to develop health and education links with the Ministry of Health and Social Care in Zanzibar. Called the Somerset-Zanzibar Link, its purpose builds on an established charity HIPZ (Health Improvement Project Zanzibar) started in 2007 up by a Musgrove Park Consultant to build and resource a community hospital in southern Zanzibar. This project was so successful that HIPZ is now developing a second community hospital in the north of the island. Through mutually established goals, the partnership is developing effective systems for learning and skills acquisition. The Somerset-Zanzibar link aims develop a whole system link with the island’s healthcare system.

Current activities

Somerset Link2

Musgrove Park Hospital leads Link-Z, focusing on improving Emergency Medicine, Radiology and Paediatric outcomes.

Between 2009-10 the work of Link-Z focused on reducing maternal and neonatal mortality by developing an ongoing ‘skills drills’ training package for doctors, midwives and clinical officers. The focus of work has since found a more natural fit to meet the needs of a new cohort of locally trained doctors qualifying in 2013 in emergency medicine. Teams of doctors, nurses and a casting technician from Musgrove Park Hospital and members of the Severn Deanery, together with other volunteers have supported the development of knowledge and practical skills in the cohort of 40 pre-reg doctors. This has involved skills training in the classroom and in practice, teaching ward rounds and in starting  from scratch setting up an emergency room at the island's main hospital Mnazi Mmoja Hospital in Stonetown.

Somerset Link3

At the same time a radiology team (Consultant and sonographers) has successfully set up systems to develop effective imaging and reporting systems to enable more accurate and confident use of imaging equipment to aid diagnosis and treatment. They have been instrumental in helping to develop a system whereby images that show problems are flagged for immediate review by a clinician rather than the patient having to return another day for diagnosis and treatment.

In addition to care of adult patients, two Consultants have taught skills in managing common paediatric emergencies to the newly qualifying doctors and to healthcare staff across the island. This work continues.
