The Newcastle–Kumasi Link, established in 2005, aims to deliver and sustain high quality clinical medical and nursing education of mutual benefit, sharing expertise and knowledge. Working jointly across the two countries we aim to devise and deliver mutually agreed support and education. Clinical visits will occur on a regular basis in order to ensure sustainability and cohesion. Implicit to the Link, wherever possible, education will be delivered in Ghana, encouraging Ghanaian health professionals to stay within their own communities. The Link respects other pre-existing collaborations.

Current activities

An educational Link between N.U.T.H./University and K.A.T.H./K.N.U.S.T. aims to improve training of health care professional “across the board”. Its emphasis is to support staff training and explore service development. Although the main focus has been to support post-graduate/under-graduate education in medicine locally, more recently this has also included post-basic nursing aiming to offer “real career training” suitable for Ghana, which goes “beyond service provision” in order to avert “brain drain”. This Link has the scope to expand beyond medical and nursing education. It is hoped it will include the training and support of laboratory staff and other Health Care Professionals. Potentially, it enables individuals in both countries in learning new skills, gaining greater adaptability and self-reliance. It also offers a fresh perspective and breadth of experience which might even be “life changing”. The Link has already identified several areas of research, aiming to develop research projects based on local Ghanaian needs. Current sustained projects include research on blood born viruses, particularly HIV 1&2.

Additional Information

Part of this link has been funded by a DelPHE grant between the Great North Children's Hospital (part of the Newcastle Hospitals Trust), Northumbria University Faculty of Nursing, the Department of Nursing at Komofo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KAT) and the University of Kumasi, to set up a collaborative project to enable the establishment of a post-basic paediatric nursing course. This has been running since 2011 and has developed into a paediatric nursing collaboration.
