Link Details

Link is between the School of Public Health, Imperial College, London and the Ministriy of Health in Rwanda and the National University of Rwanda.

It has developed from a link established in 2007 in Child Health, focussing on neonatology and paediatrics, with teaching and training of undergraduate medical students and postgraduate trainees and nurses conducted by Dr Tom Lissauer, Hon Consultant Paediatrician, Imperial College Healthcare Trust and other health professionals mainly at the University Hospitals in Butare and Kigali.

Current activities

The main activity of the link is organising an IHLFS funded programme in child health centred on Emergency Triage and Treatment plus Admission (ETAT+) courses on the recognition, triage and initial treatment of sick children. This is a 5 day course of lectures, scenario based teaching and an assessment for health professionals. These courses are being conducted in hospitals and used as an audit tool to improve the quality and safety of hospital care. The courses are also given to all final year medical students. The aim is to establish a group of local instructors to conduct the courses and implementation programme.

The teaching and training programme has been augmented by a UK paediatric doctor based at the paediatric department at the University Teaching Hospital in Kigali.

The link is also going to take part in the WHO African Parnerships for Patient Safety programme.
