Professional Associations

An important link in the medical equipment eco-system is the Professional BME Association.

The professional associations have different tasks, including advocacy for the profession and for its members, advising the Ministry of Health and other bodies in the creation and implementation of guidelines and regulations, continuous professional development and quality assurance of BME(T) training programmes.

THET was the first to identify and bring together sixteen African BME associations, during a 3.5 day workshop in Johannesburg in 2015. Since then the associations are making progress on an individual level and the existence of the African associations has been recognised by both the WHO and the IFMBE (International Federation of Medical and Biological Engineers).
