About the Link

The Scotland Malawi Partnership exists to inspire people and organisations of Scotland to be involved with Malawi in an informed, coordinated and effective way so that both nations benefit.  The Scotland Malawi Partnership is an independent charitable membership organisation. It aims to foster Links; consistent with our values; between the two nations; and encourage development of sustainable projects in Malawi.  We have over 250 members; well over 100 of them are involved in various Health Links with Malawi.

The Scotland Malawi Partnership was born from Strathclyde University’s ‘Malawi Millennium Project’ in early 2004, in response to the belief that there was a need to bring together under a single umbrella the many organizations and individuals throughout Scotland engaged in fostering and developing links between Scotland and Malawi. With the support of the Lord Provosts of Glasgow and Edinburgh, the Scotland Malawi Partnership was officially launched in April 2004.

Early events included a ‘Shaping the Partnership’ consultative conference at Strathclyde University and a health workshop. In November 2005, the SMP hosted the ‘Malawi after Gleneagles: A Commission for Africa Case-Study’ conference at the Scottish Parliament. Attended by over 250 delegates, this conference was widely acclaimed to be a resounding success. During the Conference the historic Cooperation Agreement between Scotland and Malawi was signed.

The Partnership became a fully recognized legal entity in December 2005, having registered as a Scottish Charity (SC037048) and as a Company Limited by Guarantee (SC294378). In the process, the Partnership’s Memorandum and Articles of Association was also formally ratified.

Three year funding was awarded by the Scottish Executive in 2005, which allowed the Partnership to employ a full time Administrator / Company Secretary and rent an office within the Edinburgh City Chambers.

Since 2006, the Partnership has developed its services to its member organisations (of which there are 281 – 119 full members, 162 associate). Primary activities now include: Circulating a monthly newsletter to members and other stakeholders; circulating a weekly news bulletin to keep members up to date with news from Malawi; hosting an annual ‘Malawi Independence Day Celebrations’; administering a ‘School Partnerships Working Group’; organising workshops, stakeholder meetings and training events; providing language lessons; responding to public enquiries about Malawi; producing practical publications; and organising responses to consultations (by the Scottish Government, DfID etc).

We administer a Project of Academic Exchange, involving the exchange of practitioners of higher education between various universities in Scotland and Malawi.
