About the Link
This is 10 year programme. Hampshire Partnership NHS Trust and The University of Winchester are supporting the Kintampo Rural Health Training School (KRHTS) in Ghana to develop two new mental health training programmes at KRTHS (Medical Assistant Psychiatry and Clinical Mental Health Officer). The future workforce will be supported in their practice in rural Ghana. Thousands of mentally ill Ghanaians will benefit.
Very few psychiatrists remain in Ghana and those who do are overrun with clinical work. Mental health nursing is also seriously depleted. In many places it is a challenge to provide more than basic care. These pressures allow little time for education or professional development.
The Kintampo Project has grown rapidly from a simple link between institutions, to a well supported well connected project. There is a strong determination in the Ministry of Health for this project to succeed. It is encouraging that the political will is there to advance the care of mentally ill people in Ghana.
