The Tropical Health and Education Trust (THET), supported by the Uganda-UK Health Alliance, the Kenya-UK Health Alliance and the Tanzania-UK Health Alliance is delighted to announce that tickets are now available for the UK-Africa Health Summit 2024.

Building on the long-established platform provided by the UK-East Africa Health Summit, this conference will explore the multifaceted dimensions of global health by shedding light on the intricate web of challenges faced by the health workforce worldwide and the growing movement of health professionals engaging in cross border collaboration.

The ever-evolving landscape of global health presents a myriad of challenges, from increased antimicrobial resistance to the complex dynamics of workforce mobility and persisting inadequate resourcing of health systems. Sustainable partnerships and alliances that transcend borders are a vital tool in our response.

The 2024 Summit will explore three core themes relating to the overarching conference focus of accelerating collaborative approaches to health workforce sustainability and antimicrobial stewardship:

  1. How cross border collaborations are catalysing new alliances and energising the global health community through an increasingly confident diaspora community who bring first-hand knowledge of diverse health systems.
  2. The realities of health workforce mobility, looking at the factors driving migration and its impact on healthcare delivery and the efforts being made to support and retain healthcare staff, including drawing on insights from the Global Health Workforce Programme recently launched by THET with funding from the UK Department of Health and Social Care.
  3. How a global workforce is collaborating to address the critical challenge of escalating antibiotic resistance, and anticipating the High-Level Meeting on AMR which will take place in New York in September 2024.

Day 1 of the Summit will focus on health workforce mobility, including diaspora health workers who we affectionately call “health diplomats” as they move with ease between health systems. Breakout sessions on Day 1 will include reflections on the opportunities and challenges this brings, building on our 2021 report ‘From Drain to Gain’. We will also consider how to mobilise the voices of diaspora healthcare workers, helping everyone to speak up on issues including progress toward Universal Health Coverage.

Day 2 of the Summit will provide a platform for Health Partnerships to share challenges and lessons they have learned across a range of topics to consider what best practice looks like (such as THET Principles of Partnership and lessons in sustainability). We will also be joined by Professor Dame Sally Davies, UK Special Envoy on AMR, who will share her reflections on how the Health Partnership community can support real progress in tackling AMR ahead of the 2024 UNGA High-Level Meeting on AMR in September.

The outline UK-Africa Health Summit 2024 agenda can be viewed here. CPD accreditation will be available for conference attendees.

Conference participants are invited to engage through discussions, interactive workshops, and collaborative sessions related to each of the themes, and to hear keynote speeches grounding this work in an appreciation of the priorities being discussed by the representatives of African and UK Governments.

Join us, as we strive to build a healthier world together by forging closer ties between Africa and the UK.
