The Tropical Health and Education Trust (THET) is launching a new fellowship scheme to honour the memory of our founder Professor Sir Eldryd Parry, who sadly passed away in November last year.

The Fellowship will be awarded to an outstanding health worker from Ethiopia to support them in progressing their career and strengthening the health system. The Eldryd Parry Fellowship will also support the co-creation of knowledge exchanges between Ethiopian institutions and counterparts in the UK.

Ben Simms, Chief Executive Officer at THET commented: “Eldryd’s entirely respectful interest in the culture and ideas of other people, combined with his energy and charisma, secured mutual trust with partners around the world and proved such a powerful force for good. We are privileged to announce the new Eldryd Parry Fellowship in his honour, which will help continue the incredible work started by Eldryd at THET 35 years ago.”

Early to mid-career health workers from public or not-for-profit Ethiopian health institutions involved in a Health Partnership will be eligible for the Fellowship. The successful Fellow will be funded to lead a quality improvement project within their health institution, run a short research project, or contribute towards scholarship fees. The Fellowship will provide a £5,000 grant to the first Fellow later this year.

Mr Simms added: “It was an honour to spend several years working closely with Eldryd at the Tropical Health and Education Trust. Eldryd’s impact on global health is immeasurable, and he was respected in all corners of the globe.”

Following his passing, THET continues to embody Sir Eldryd’s philosophy, which he once eloquently distilled as: “Where do you want to go, how can we help you get there, where are the gaps, how can we help you fill them?” Our approach has never been, and never will be “we will do this for you”.
